Immigration Stories

An expatriates guide gives you advice and supports you in your process of settling in. As we all know getting to a new country involves work and it is a hard process, there are a lot of things involved, and many steps to take. We decided to create a guide and website to help you ease and simplify your process. Creation and design of website.

Problem

In Metro Vancouver, Canada, 25,000 immigrants landed between January and August 2018, according to data from Immigrant, Refugees, Citizenship Canada. That’s the majority of the 32,000 who landed in the entire province of B.C. during that time period. And many more thousands come on temporary work permits, as refugees or as international students in hopes of staying permanently one day.

Some may be fleeing war, while others are seeking new opportunities and a better life. But they all have one thing in common: they need information after they arrive to help them in their immigration journey.

— Canadian Immigrant Fair

As a team of expatriates settled in Vancouver, BC, International students from Emily Carr University decided to design a special curation of content necessary to settle in.

Some of the UX Touchpoints that were designed in the service included the following:

  1. Multilingual Website

  2. Informational Pamphlet

  3. Interactive Roadmaps

  4. Weekly Podcast

  5. Social Media Content

  6. Newsletter

Multilingual Website

Using our own lived experiences as primary research it was decided to design a website that could have a wide outreach independently from the users origin or language. We decided to gather what we as expatriates felt it was helpful and people would gain the most from.

One of the easiest way to obtain important information regarding immigration processes is online, but official websites are hard to navigate. The main problem we wanted to tackle when creating this was to create a website that even though is filled with information is easy to navigate.

That’s why we designed a user-friendly platform that could be accessed at any time and followed these principles:

  1. User Experience Oriented

  2. Infographic and Visually Dependent

  3. Simple and Clear

  4. Empathetic

  5. Accessible

Sitemap

One of the main things I was responsible for when creating the website was to do a Sitemap so we could know what information we wanted to show. Also we wanted to have a high level of the potential user journey. We used the sitemap as an initial tool to build a functional website and to be clear that the information was clear.

Informational Pamphlet

The Informational Pamphlet not only served as an entry point in the service for newcomers to the city. It introduced key insights in terms of legal, financial, social and medical scenarios. The idea was to place the pamphlet in key places such as airpots, travel agencies, tourists points, and key government organizations such as ICBC, or others. The additional point where we wanted to show the informational pamphlet is on the website so people could share it with others and to have a high level of things helpful.
